No matter you are a Windows Vista or 7 User or using Widows XP, or running a personal server, it’s essential to know how long your PC has been up or running and accordingly you can fix a rest hour for your PC. It makes a huge difference if you remain unaware about this essentiality of Windows. Consistent and restless use of your PC may cause a hazard or damage. If you are a Windows 7 or Vista user, then go though the following steps to determine the running hour of your PC.

Steps to Follow

Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar of your PC.

Click “Task Manger”.

Instead you can also type “taskmgr.exe” in the search box of Windows Start Menu and press enter.

Both the procedures will launch the “Windows Task Manager” before you. Now find out how long your PC is running from “Up Time” located under the “System” menu. See the below given Screen Shot.

But if you are a Windows XP user, then you have to follow some different procedures. For Windows Home Server, XP or Server 2003, click the “Start” button and start “Run”.

Type “cmd” there and press “Enter”.

You will get prompted with the Command Prompt.

Now type “net stats srv” at the command prompt type and press “Enter” again.

Now you can see the line statistics as it displays the date and time your system has been running. Given below, a screen shot of the same.

If you are a keyboard shortcut lover and like to work with your computer using keyboard shortcuts, then the article will help you to create one more shortcut to make your task easier. Shortcut keys help you to save your valuable times as well as improve your productivity. In this article you will learn, how to open a particular folder by assigning a unique shortcut key. Opening a folder is a very time taking process, if the folder is not placed on the desktop. You have to browse through Windows explorer, open up the hard drive partition and navigate from one folder to its sub folders. But, by assigning a keyboard shortcut, you can simply open the folder within no time. Follow the steps below to assign a keyboard shortcut to any folder.

Assign a shortcut key to Open any folder in Windows

Right click the folder to which you want to assign a keyboard shortcut , and create a desktop shortcut to it

Right click on the desktop shortcut >> select properties

Now in the Shortcut Key box enter a unique keyboard shortcut that you want to use. I have entered Ctrl + Alt + L

Click OK

From now you can use the keyboard shortcut to open the that folder at anytime. The trick will work in Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP.

You may sometime find that in your absence your employees are accessing some social networking sites, which is hampering your productivity or your students in your school accessing some sites which is not good for them. If you want to block useless or harmful websites, you can download any software that can help you to block these sites. But if you find it expensive, you can simply block these sites by editing the Hosts file. Here are some easy steps that will help you to block websites.

Block social networking Websites on Your Computer

Click on Start >> Click All Programs >> Select Accessories >> Select Notepad

Click on File >> Select Open and browse through the following location to open the hosts file

%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\ (for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista and Windows 7)
%WinDir%\ (for Windows 95/98/Me)
%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts ( for vista & windows xp)

When the hosts file will be opened, look for the following line

127.0.0.1 localhost

Then, under this line add the names of websites that you want to block. For example if you want to block facebook on your computer then add the site name as follow:

127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com

Add all the site names you want to block and save the hosts file

When the next time anyone will try to open the sites that you have blocked, a message box will appear as below

Hopefully the tutorial will help you a lot.

The hosts file is used to map host names to IP addresses. It is a plain-text file that contains IP address and one or more host names. It is not possible to edit the hosts file directly with Notepad and whenever you try to save the file after editing and modifying it, you will get an error message like- “You don’t have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission”. Though you have logged in as administrator, you will not able to save the host file. You can’t even overwrite and replace the host file.
